As a consequence, opioid-related deaths have continued to rise. In 2011, 416 individuals in Connecticut overdosed on opioids. By 2016, that number more than doubled to 974 deaths.

In fact, according to a report from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration, 3.4 percent of those in Delaware were dependent on illicit drugs from 2013–2014 (higher than the national 2.6 percent).

Georgia’s Opioid Crisis

Like most of the United States, Georgia has been significantly impacted by the opioid crisis of the past few decades. Starting in the early 1990s, doctors in the state and across the country began to prescribe more opioid medications than ever before. While these were originally thought to be beneficial for helping manage pain, the devastating rates of addiction that came from opioid use quickly became apparent.

In the past few years, states across the country have restricted the availability of opioid prescriptions. In Georgia, the opioid prescription rate dropped from 88.6 per 100 residents in 2011 to 77.8 in 2016.
